Samuel has been widely acknowledged by his peers and the public and was awarded the AFI Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Television Drama Series for The Secret Life of Us in 2001 and was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for After the Deluge in 2003. His Logie nominations include Most Popular Actor in 2002 and 2003 and Most Outstanding Actor in 2003.
Samuel was involved with CanTeen (The Australian Teenage Cancer Patients Society) for ten years, first as a member, then as a youth leader and culminating in “Lifecycle 2003”, which saw him ride from Sydney to Melbourne on a unicycle. He covered 1003.4 kilometres, raising awareness for CanTeen and $500,000.
After his girlfriend suicided in 2006 he turned his attentions to Open Family, a charity that provides outreach support for ‘at risk’ youths on the streets of Melbourne, becoming a Youth Bus Volunteer. In 2007 he became a founding Committee Member for the Open Family Arts Initiative, giving 11 ‘at risk’ youths the chance to write, direct and produce a short film under mentorships from industry professionals. The initiative was chronicled recently by Australian Story on the ABC and helped raise awareness for the program and Open Family.
